GOODLATTE LOBBIES FOR ROANOKE ROUTE

Like many elected officials in Western Virginia, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Roanoke, hadn't even heard of the proposed Interstate 73 until a few months ago.

How'd he find out? A South Carolina lobbyist came up to him in Congress and asked for Goodlatte's help in getting the proposed highway routed through Myrtle Beach.

Since then, Goodlatte also has taken up the I-73 cause, pushing for a route that goes through the Roanoke Valley. He recently met with Gov.-elect George Allen to persuade him to support a Roanoke route.

Goodlatte said he expects the Allen administration to recommend a route early in 1994 - and then negotiate with West Virginia and North Carolina to make sure their routes match up.
