ROANOKE EXPRESS CONTINUES JUGGLING ROSTER

The Roanoke Express continues to juggle its roster.

The East Coast Hockey League club announced two more transactions Thursday, picking up forward Stephen Tepper from Kansas City of the International Hockey League and trading center Oleg Santuryan to Richmond in exchange for center Roger Larche and future considerations.

Tepper, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound right wing, was the Chicago Blackhawks' seventh choice, 134th overall, in the 1987 NHL entry draft. Tepper played one game for the Blackhawks last season before spending the next 44 games in the IHL with Indianapolis and Kansas City, where collectively he had four goals, 11 assists and 91 penalty minutes.

Santuryan, a Russian native, was picked up by Roanoke two weeks ago but saw action in only one game.

Larche had two goals, three assists and 41 penalty minutes in eight games with the Renegades. Larche is no stranger to the area, having played the final third of last season with the Roanoke Valley Rampage.

Roanoke coach Frank Anzalone, whose club concludes an eight-day break Saturday when it plays Hampton Roads at the Roanoke Civic Center, is expected to trade or waive a player today in order to make roster room for Tepper.

In another ECHL development Thursday, Huntington fired head coach Bob Kelly. The expansion Blizzard is in last place in the ECHL West with a league-worst 5-13-2 record. There was no word on who will replace Kelly behind the Huntington bench.

Track champions of the 1993 racing season at New River Valley Speedway in Radford will be honored tonight at an awards banquet at the Salem Civic Center.

Paul Radford of Ferrum will reap many rewards for winning his first NASCAR Late Model Stock Car championship after 41 years of racing. He will take home more than $7,000 of the $25,543 to be presented to the top drivers in all five divisions.

Kenny Montgomery of Parrott was the Limited Sportsman winner; Charlie Smith of Dublin captured the Modified Mini Stock crown; the Mini-Stock title went to Tony Howell of Christiansburg; and Tommy Allie of Christiansburg won the Pure Stock honor.

Other awards will be presented to the champions as part of the NASCAR/Winston Racing Series sanctions.

Additional awards will be presented for rookie of the year, most poles, most wins and Gold Wrench winners.

The event begins at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7. Awards presentations get under way at 8.
