KING'S LATEST DRAMA IS AT ELLISTON CHURCH

"Death: Of the Wicked and of the Righteous," the latest drama by Christian playwright, artist and poet GLENA JESSEE KING of Elliston, will be performed at 7 p.m. today and Sunday at Elliston Church of God, U.S. 11/460 near Elliston Food Mart.

"I've always felt the call of God," King has said. Her plays have become a holiday fixture for the past 15 years in the New River Valley. Most of them, she said, are about the forces of good and evil and survival through faith.

King described her latest work as "a play within a play," and describes the framework as "a short, spirited comedy with a really good spiritual meaning."

Set in the late 1800s, the main story focuses on a "schoolmarm" who runs into problems within her community. "It's a little bit different," King said. "It may be controversial for some people."

As she explains it, the play involves "a powerful dream of heaven and hell" and revelation through brief moments in the lives of both good and wicked biblical figures. In one "touching scene," she said, the prophet Simeon holds the baby Jesus and foresees Christ's crucifixion 33 years later.

The cast comprises about two dozen players, and the production runs about 1 1/2 hours.
