COUNTY REVENUE CHIEF SELECTS NEW DEPUTY

In a move that may signal his choice as successor, Roanoke County Commissioner of Revenue Wayne Compton said this week that he would appoint Democratic Party activist Carolyn Flippen as his chief deputy.

Flippen, 45, will replace Compton's daughter, Marsha Fielder, who was elected last month to the commissioner's post in Roanoke.

Flippen brings experience in real estate and insurance to the deputy's job, as well as Democratic Party credentials.

Flippen is chairman of the Roanoke County Democratic Party and a former field representative to retired Rep. Jim Olin. She was on the county Planning Commission in the late 1980s. She is office manager for a Vinton law firm that includes House Majority Leader Richard Cranwell, D-Roanoke County.

Compton's term runs through the end of 1995, and he said he would seek one more four-year term after that.

Compton declined to say whether he was looking to Flippen as an heir apparent.

"That remains to be seen," Flippen said. "All I plan to do is to get in and learn the job to the best of my ability."

Her starting salary will be between $28,000 and $30,000, Compton said.

Flippen said her varied work experience would be helpful in the commissioner's office, which is in charge of maintaining property and real estate tax records.

"It feels good to realize that all those night classes are going to pay off," she said.
