State police believe the accidents may have been triggered by a car going south in the northbound lane just before 6 p.m.
Trooper Harvey Spahr said state police received a call about a car being driven the wrong way, but none of the people involved in the accidents said they saw the vehicle.
No one was seriously injured, but traffic was slowed for nearly two hours, state police said.
One of the accidents involved 11 cars, according to Spahr. Troopers were called to at least two other wrecks - both involving six or seven vehicles, Spahr said.
