BRIEFLY PUT . . .

NASA's space telescope, now apparently repaired, is named after astronomer Edwin Hubble, who discovered that galaxies are moving away from each other. But Robert Hubbell, editor of the family newsletter, reports that some family members think the astronomer's accomplishments pale beside those of baseball Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell.

Ridiculous. Still ... Carl Hubbell was the top pitcher of his era, specializing in a screwball that breaks in the opposite direction of a normal curve. In the first and second innings of the 1934 All-Star Game, he did strike out - in a row - Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmy Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin.

With spring training just a couple of months away ... hmmm. Edwin Hubble vs. Carl Hubbell? The majesty of the stars must defeat even that of the diamond, but it's a darn close call.
