JEFFERSON FOREST REPEATS AS CHAMP

Billy Smith rushed for 93 yards on 25 carries and scored on a 7-yard run Saturday as Jefferson Forest defeated Matoaca 21-14 for its second consecutive Group AA Division 3 high school football title.

Jefferson Forest, ranked No. 6 in The Associated Press prep poll, rolled up 269 yards while holding No. 4 Matoaca to 160 yards. Jefferson Forest beat Matoaca 35-14 in last year's final.

Steve Mistretta ran for 45 yards on eight carries and scored on a 14-yard run for Jefferson Forest. Quarterback Anthony Poindexter threw for 92 yards and scored on a 10-yard run.

Matoaca quarterback Craig Akins completed nine of 28 passes for 129 yards, including a 20-yard scoring strike to Cornell Lewis.

\ Middlesex 10\ Appalachia 6

SALUDA - Kenny Acree scored on a 3-yard plunge with 33 seconds left as Middlesex defeated Appalachia for the Group A Division 1 title.

Appalachia, ranked No. 2 in The Associated Press prep poll and a three-time state champion, led 6-3 in the third quarter on a 9-yard run by Robert Warburton. But No. 8 Middlesex, making its first appearance in a state final, came back with a fourth-quarter rally, capped by Acree's third-down scoring run.

Middlesex's Jermaine Brokenborough was the game's top rusher with 107 yards on 26 carries. Acree ran 15 times for 57 yards. Devin Whitaker kicked a 21-yard field goal.

Appalachia quarterback Larry Huff ran for 63 yards on 12 carries and completed three of six passes for 49 yards.

\ Rustburg 20\ Nansemond River 6

SUFFOLK - Fullback Shannon Cardwell rushed for 84 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns as Rustburg rolled to the Group AA Division 4 championship.

Rustburg, ranked ninth in The Associated Press poll, won the state title four years ago. No. 10 Nansemond River was playing in its first state championship game since the school opened in 1990.

Rustburg's Telly Anthony scored on a 91-yard kickoff return to open the second half. Cardwell scored on runs of 3 and 23 yards.

Rustburg halfback Tyrone Scott rushed for 56 yards on 17 carries.

Nansemond River's Donald Turner had a 16-yard touchdown on a trick play early in the fourth quarter.

\ Norcom 19\ Langley 0

CHESAPEAKE - Terry Ricks scored all three touchdowns as Norcom shut out Langley to claim the Group AAA Division 5 championship.

Norcom, ranked second in The Associated Press poll, won its first state title since integration in the 1960s. Unranked Langley was making its first appearance in a state final.

Norcom had five sacks, forced three turnovers and limited Langley to 100 yards in total offense, 18 on the ground. Langley's deepest penetration was to the Norcom 45.

Ricks rushed 18 times for 119 yards and scored on runs of 14, 15 and 5 yards.
