NAVAJO NATION PLANS TO CHANGE ITS NAME

The Navajo Nation, one of the largest Indian tribes in the United States, is considering changing its name to one that better reflects its cultural roots.

In what the tribe acknowledges is an unusual step, the Navajos are talking about abandoning their well-known name for a more traditional one, "Dine" (pronounced di-Nay), which means "People of the Earth." - Knight-Ridder/Tribune
