LEXINGTON CRUSHES JAMES RIVER 75-37

The Lexington Wildcats jumped to a 45-15 halftime lead en route to a 75-37 non-district blowout of James River Tuesday.

Marty Early scored a game-high 24 points, Kenny Lewis scored 10 and Rob Hoyle added two points and 10 rebounds. Every player scored for Rockbridge County (2-1).

James River (0-1) turned the ball over 23 times in the first half. \

Lord Botetourt 65

Covington 62

COVINGTON - Shannon Williams scored 21 points and Ryan Salvi added 15 as the Cavaliers held on for a non-district win over the Cougars.

Lord Botetourt (2-1) led by eight points with 30 seconds remaining in the game, but Keeno Jones, who led all scorers with 26 points, and Corey Hunter nailed 3-point shots to pull the Cougars within two. Covington (0-2) had a chance to win the game, but turned the ball over with four seconds remaining.

The Cavaliers enjoyed a large advantage in rebounding, 52-33. \

Gretna 56

GRETNA - Hot shooting in the third quarter enabled the Bengals to build a 15-point lead and stave off the Hawks in the Piedmont District game.

Tyree Hairston had 12 of his 25 points in the third quarter for Bassett (2-2 overall, 1-2 in the district) and Art Wade added 21 points. Gretna's William Merritt scored 20 points despite a miserable shooting night from the floor. Gretna is 1-3 overall and in the league.

CHATHAM - Magna Vista blasted out to an early lead and coasted to the Piedmont District victory.

Tony Holmes led the scoring for the Warriors (4-0, 4-0) with 22 points. Chatham (0-4, 0-4) was paced by Derrick Logan with 16.

Carroll County 47

WYTHEVILLE - The Maroons opened their season with a non-district victory over the Cavaliers (1-3). Aaron Andrews scored 19 points, Jeff Bourne had 10 points and six steals and Andre Cook had 10 rebounds and five points for George Wythe. The Maroons stepped up their defense in the fourth quarter, which sparked their offense to 26 points, nearly matching their output for the first three quarters. John Woolford's 20 points led Carroll County. \

Rocky Gap 62

NARROWS - The Green Wave stormed back from a 19-point fourth quarter deficit behind Patrick Bailey, who had 12 of his 24 during the comeback, to stun the visiting Eagles in a Mountain Empire District game.

Bailey hit a layup with 20 seconds left to tie the score at 62. He was fouled, but missed the free throw. But the Green Wave's Norman Perkins snagged the rebound and called time out with 15 second left. The ball was inbounded to point guard Brett Mosely, who split through two defenders in the lane to lay in the winning shot.

Jeff White sank a couple of 3-pointers and finished with 12 points for Narrows (1-2, 1-0). Frank Nunley led Rocky Gap (0-3, 0-3) with 20 points.

MARTINSVILLE - The Bulldogs built a 13-point lead by the end of the third quarter and held off the Lancers in a Piedmont District game.

Michael Martin led Martinsville (4-1, 3-1) with 17 points, while freshman Manti Venable added 15. The Lancers (3-1, 3-1) were paced by Tyree Adams' 17 points, including three 3-point goals. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 68

COLLINSVILLE - Fieldale-Collinsville's pressure resulted in some transition baskets in the fourth quarter as the Cavaliers pulled away for the Piedmont District victory over the Wildcats.

Chad Cobb had 23 points and Shane Donavant 22 to pace the Cavs (3-1, 3-1). Erick Ferguson scored 14 for Dan River (1-3, 1-3). \

Parry McCluer 59

Riverheads 48

BUENA VISTA - The Fighting Blues built an early lead, staved off a Riverheads rally, and won the non-district game.

Parry McCluer (2-1) was led by Nathan Baker's 15 points, Brian Sizemore added 13, and Kris Carter had 11. Riverheads (2-1), which got no closer than six points in the fourth quarter, had 17 points from James Doyle and 11 from Mike Wieger.

INDEPENDENCE - Wes Self scored five of his 10 points in the first quarter as the Blue Devils took an 11-point lead and coasted to the Mountain Empire District victory.

Bryan Boyer had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Devils (3-0, 3-0). He was backed up by Shane Griffith's 16 points. Galax (1-2, 1-1) was paced by Matt Snow's 13. Jeff Ross and Ken Houtz added 11 each, while Tito Crockett contributed 10.

Shawsville 40

BLAND - The Rockets used a 31-point second quarter to ice the Mountain Empire District contest.

Shawsville (0-3, 0-2) led 17-14 after one quarter, but Bland (2-1, 2-1) used a full-court press to force numerous Shawnees turnovers in the second quarter.

Bland's Shannon Havens scored eight of his 17 points in the second period, and Scot Goins added 10 points. Thirteen Rockets scored in all.

The Shawnees were led by Darrell Bibb's game-high 18 points. \

Covington Boys' Home 81

Mount Carmel 69

COVINGTON - Scottie Forbes and Donnie Costigan combined for 51 points as Covington Boys' Home rolled to its fifth victory in six games.

Forbes scored a game-high 28 points, while Costigan had 23. Mount Carmel (3-1) was led by Christ Stoneburger's 19 points. \
