CAV AMONG FINALISTS FOR SOCCER AWARD

University of Virginia soccer player Claudio Reyna has been selected as one of three finalists for the 1993 Hermann Trophy, the oldest and most prestigious award recognizing college soccer's top male and female players.

The other finalists for the award, sponsored by Reebok, are Jimmy Glenn of Clemson and Brian McBride of St. Louis.

Reyna, a third-year midfielder, had 10 goals and eight assists this past season. He was the 1992 Missouri Athletic Club Sports Foundation Collegiate player of the year.

Hermann Trophy winners will be announced at the National Soccer Coaches Association Convention in January in Santa Clara, Calif. One other UVa player has won the Hermann Trophy: goalkeeper Tony Meola in 1989.

In other college news:

Robert Hull, a sophomore defensive tackle on the Washington and Lee football team, has been selected to the Champion Division III All-America second team.

Hull, a graduate of Lexington High School, led the Generals with 111 tackles this fall and tied a school record with 10 sacks. He also led the defense with eight tackles for loss, five forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries. He was selected to the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference first team and was chosen to the Roanoke Times & World-News Division II-III all-state team.

Two other ODAC players were selected to the Division III All-America team. Running back Ronnie Howard, the 1993 ODAC player of the year, was named to the second team, and Emory & Henry defensive back Ricky Webb, who led the nation with eight interceptions in eight games, was selected to the third team.

The All-America team is chosen by a nationwide panel of 26 sports information directors.

Radford and Virginia Tech claimed three of the six positions on the 1993 Division I Virginia All-State women's volleyball team, as chosen by the Virginia Sports Information Directors' Association.

Radford was represented by junior setter Deidre Davis and three-time All-Big South hitter Anne Fontaine, a senior. They led the Highlanders to a 25-10 record, the Big South Conference Tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament berth.

Virginia Tech was represented by three-time All-Metro Conference player Heather Berglund, an outside hitter who had 431 kills, 40 service aces and a Metro-leading 3.7 digs per game.

Rounding out the team were player of the year Andrea Smith, a senior from George Mason who was the Colonial Athletic Association player of the year; Virag Domokos, the CAA rookie of the year from George Mason; and All-CAA hitter Anna Finley of William and Mary. George Mason's Pat Kendrick was the coach of the year.

Virginia Commonwealth women's basketball coach Susan Walvius has announced that junior guard Tasha Courtney has been dismissed from the team for disciplinary reasons. The dismissal stemmed from an incident during the VCU-McNeese State game Monday, when Courtney left the gymnasium after a dispute with an assistant coach. Courtney averaged 7.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in the team's first six games.
