UVA'S DIXON ARRESTED, CHARGED WITH ASSAULT

All-America offensive guard Mark Dixon and a former member of Virginia's football team were arrested Wednesday on charges they assaulted two men in a Charlottesville tavern.

Dixon, 23, of Jamestown, N.C., was charged with two counts of assault and battery, and William Edwards, 22, of Clinton, Md., also an offensive guard, was charged with one count of assault and battery.

Each was released on his own recognizance pending a Jan. 7 hearing in Charlottesville General District Court.

Dixon, a 6-foot-4, 283-pound senior who was suspended from the team after Virginia's 10th game for academic reasons, was selected an Associated Press first-team All-American last week.

Edwards, a 6-6, 299-pound senior, broke a leg in the spring and had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in the fall. He withdrew from school last week.

Charlottesville police said Dixon and Edwards were involved in a fight early Saturday at the Biltmore Grill. Dixon and Edwards were charged with assaulting Richard P. Bell. Dixon also was charged with assaulting Joshua A. Goldschmidt.

Bell and Goldschmidt are both 22 and residents of Charlottesville. Bell's nose was broken and Goldschmidt suffered a dislocated shoulder, police said. Both were treated at a hospital and released.

The altercation was preceded by Dixon and Edwards "bullying their way through the crowd" at the Biltmore, according to a police report.
