SALEM ANIMAL SHELTER PLANS OPEN HOUSE

Some people in Salem are not aware that the city has an animal shelter, and Sgt. William Bandy Jr. wants to educate them.

As the chief animal-control officer for Salem, he invites everyone to the shelter's 16th annual "Pound Party" open house Saturdayfrom 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The pound is at 1301 Indiana St., near Salem's recycling drop-off center.

"The main purpose of the open house is to make the public aware that there are a lot of stray animals in Salem," Bandy said.

The open house will give visitors a chance to meet personnel in the Animal-Control Department, enjoy some refreshments and tour the facilities - 10 dog runs and 17 cat cages.

And there will be animals - mostly dogs and cats - available for adoption.

Bandy said the shelter has an adoption fee of $25, but with that comes a $20 certificate toward having the animal spayed or neutered.

The shelter does not solicit food or money from the public, Bandy said, because it is financed by Salem tax funds.

However, any donations will be accepted, he said. Several stores in Salem donate most of the food the shelter needs, he said, and school groups often donate food or money.

Employees at the shelter have created a Distressed Animal Fund at Salem Animal Hospital, and donations are welcome. The fund covers medical care for injured or sick animals.

The shelter's operating hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4:30 p.m. On Sunday, the hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
