RAIDERS OVERPOWER HALE 81-44

North Cross opened its boys' high school basketball season in style Thursday.

Marcus Cardwell scored 23 and Montrice Smith added 19 to power the Raiders to an 81-44 victory over Hale of Raleigh, N.C., in the Greensboro (N.C.) Day Classic.

North Cross started sluggishly, trailing 16-15 after one quarter. But the Raiders outscored Hale 26-8 in the second quarter to take control.

Cardwell and John Prillaman led the team in rebounding with nine each. Cardwell also had six assists.

Hale is 4-2.

In another tournament game, St. Maria-Goretti (Md.) defeated Carlisle 96-44.

Roanoke Valley Christian 66

MERCER, W.Va. - Matthew Miller scored 31 points to lead Mercer Christian to a non-district victory over the Eagles.

Roanoke Valley Christian (2-4) got 17 points from Billy Fluker and 13 from Josh MacDermod. Philip Wegner added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Joel Young had 14 points and Curtis Turner 11 for Mercer (2-0). \

Heritage 56

Reggie Reynolds scored 25 points to lead four Colonels in double figures as Fleming whipped the Pioneers in a non-district game.

Derrick Hines had 18 and William Fitzgerald and James Stokes added 17 apiece for the host Colonels (5-1).

Heritage (0-3) was led by Calvin Thompson with 15 points and Rod Farmer with 11.

Despite not practicing this week because of semester exams, the Raiders pulled away from the Tigers in the fourth quarter to win a Blue Ridge Conference game.

Lesley Dodson, who had a team-high 10 points, scored off a steal with about one minute remaining to put North Cross (4-1) ahead to stay. Emily Cook added nine points and 10 rebounds for the Raiders.

Beth Sykes led Hargrave (0-3) with 12 points. \
