ABANDONED BABY `NICK' GIVEN TO FOSTER PARENTS

An abandoned newborn who spent his first few hours wrapped in a towel behind the rear wheels of a tractor trailer received his first Christmas present Friday - foster parents.

The baby, found by a trucker in a motel parking lot, was released from Hershey Medical Center after spending six days recovering from stress brought on by cold temperatures and an unusual introduction to the world.

The boy, who weighs just over 7 pounds, is being placed with foster parents, a social worker said. Their names or address were not disclosed.

Authorities are still trying to figure out who gave birth to the child. The boy still had part of his umbilical cord attached when he was found Dec. 10 in a Holiday Inn parking lot off Route 81 in Grantville, 15 miles northeast of Harrisburg.

The baby has since been nurtured by hospital employees who began calling him Nick, as in St. Nick, in honor of his birth during the holiday season. He has no formal name. Records refer to him as Baby John Doe.
