Christiansburg Fire Department members were called to 1776 Ellett Road, just outside the town limits, at about 3:30 a.m. and were on the scene for about 2 1/2 hours, said Jimmy Williams, assistant fire chief.
Williams said firefighters from Riner and Blacksburg helped fight the fire.
Williams said the house was ruined by the fire, with substantial damage concentrated in three rooms. Pierce Lambert, who lived at the house, told firefighters he suspected the fire was started by an electric heater.
