AUBURN RIPS NARROWS 89-61

Riding a hot-shooting third quarter, Auburn defeated Narrows 89-61 in high school boys' basketball Friday night.

The Eagles (3-1 overall, 3-1 Mountain Empire District) won the third quarter 25-8 to take a commanding lead.

Terry Millirons had 21 points and John Reed added 19 for Auburn.

Narrows (1-3, 1-3) got off to a slow start and trailed 18-9 after the first quarter.

Bryan Pruett led Narrows with 14 points. Patrick Bailey and Scott Stafford added 10 points each. \

G.W.-Danville 91

Pulaski County 70

DANVILLE - The Eagles used two big runs and had five players score in double figures as they routed the Cougars in a non-district matchup.

G.W.-Danville connected on 21 of 30 shots from the floor in the first half. The Eagles went on an 18-3 run near the end of the first half to take a 46-27 halftime lead, then began the second half with a 16-2 run to take a 62-29 lead.

Len Withers led the Eagles with 15 points.

Pulaski County, in its season opener, was led by Tyrone Hash's game-high 28 points.

Fort Chiswell 68

GALAX - The Maroon Tide (2-2, 2-1) hit six of its first eight field-goal attempts in the third quarter while building a 10-point lead, then held off the Pioneers (0-2, 0-2) in the Mountain Empire District.

The closest Fort Chiswell came the rest of the way was the final margin on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Tito Crockett led Galax with 18 points, Ken Houtz scored 11 and Matt Snow added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Jody Burnett (25 points) and Dyer Jackson (21) provided most of the Pioneers' offense.

Ballard (W.Va.) Christian 45

BLACKSBURG - The Crusaders pulled away in the second half to post a non-conference win over the Eagles.

Aaron Meadows scored a game-high 25 points for Gateway Christian (2-1), and Ryan Gordon added 17. The two combined to score 9 of the Crusaders' 15 points in the third period.

Gateway jumped to a 24-12 lead, but only led 33-30 at half. Then, the Crusaders picked up their defense in the second half to cement the win.

Ballard Christian (1-4) was outscored 37-15 in the second half. \

Rocky Gap 36

Giles 34

ROCKY GAP - Nathan Blessing's steal with six seconds remaining thwarted a comeback attempt by the Spartans and gave the Eagles a Mountain Empire District win.

The teams combined to shoot 26 of 99 from the floor, and only 24 points were scored at halftime.

Eric Faulkner led Rocky Gap (1-3, 1-3) with 14 points. Patrick Steele led Giles (0-1, 0-1) with 13. \

Shawsville 53

FLOYD - Jason Light scored 13 of his 21 points in the first quarter as the Buffaloes stampeded the Shawnees in the Mountain Empire District.

Jamie Warren added 21 for Floyd County (3-1, 3-1), which held a 65-18 halftime lead.

Darrell Bibb tallied 28 points for Shawsville (0-5, 0-5). \

Alleghany 92

Blacksburg 66

LOW MOOR - The Mountaineers outscored the Indians 46-20 in the middle two quarter to take the non-district victory.

Thirteen players scored for Alleghany (2-3), led by Dusty Rowland and James Hughes with 17 points each.

Blacksburg (0-3) got 17 points from Tony Wheeler.

Radford 49

MARION - Jason Lefler's 15 points paced the Scarlet Hurricane over the Bobcats in a non-district game.

Marion broke the game open by outscoring Radford 18-8 in the second quarter.

Casey Underpaced paced the Bobcats (2-4) with 14 points. \

Grayson County 63

Bland 57

INDEPENDENCE - Shane Griffith scored all 17 of his points in the second half as the Blue Devils came back to win a Mountain Empire District game over the Rockets.

Bland (2-2, 2-2) led 37-32 early in the third quarter, but a 9-3 run paced by two Griffith 3-pointers put Grayson on top for good at 41-40.

Bryan Boyer added 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Devils.

Shannon Havens led Bland with 18 points. \
