OBIT UPDIKE, LULA ROBERTS
UPDIKE, Lula Roberts, 91, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, December 16,
1993 at the residence of her daughter, Hilda U. Ayers. She was born December
20, 1901 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late James W. Roberts and Fannie
Gibbs Roberts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren L. Updike and
a son, Edwin Ashby Updike. She was an active member of the Quaker Baptist
Church. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Hilda U. and Loyd
Ayers, Elsie U. Gillespie of Bedford, Katheryn U. and William Schroeder of
Stevenson, Mich.; a son and daughters-in-law, W. Holmes and Wray Updike, Fay
P. Updike of Bedford; two sisters, Elsie R. Granger of Philadelphia, Pa.,
Frances Hawkins of Bedford; one brother, Gordon Roberts of Tucson, Ariz.; 10
grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Funeral
Services will be conducted Sunday, December 19, 1993 at 2 p.m. from the Quaker
Baptist Church, by the Rev. Lewis Garst, the Rev. Elmer Sellers, and the Rev.
Robert Sherrill. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will
receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford, and
request that those wishing to make memorials consider the Quaker Baptist
Church.
