BLAINE P. "BEEP" FRIEDLANDER JR. has been named science writer in Radford University's public information and relations office. Friedlander has written an astronomy and space column for The Washington Post. In his new position, he will distribute information about the scientific work being done at Radford, as well as help faculty and students write articles for commercial publication.
\ CHRISTINA M. MACCHERONE also has joined Radford University's public information and relations office as assistant news bureau director and public relations specialist. Her responsibilities include supporting operation of the news bureau and writing for several campus publications.

NANCY F. BROWN has been hired as an investment executive at Ferguson, Andrews & Associates in Bristol, the Roanoke-based firm's seventh Virginia office, which was opened recently. She previously was employed by Dominion Bank, NationsBank and State Farm Insurance.
\ MORTGAGE LENDERS
JOHN C. PEARCE III has joined First Union Mortgage Corp. as division head of its Mortgage Loan Servicing Group. Based in Raleigh, N.C., he will supervise operation of the group, which includes an office in Roanoke.
LEIGH-ANN BEAMER and JASON DEXTER HOBBIE IV have joined Columbia National Mortgage Corp.'s Roanoke office. Before coming to Columbia National, formerly Tidemark Mortgage, Beamer was assistant branch manager of NBC Bank in Roanoke. Hobbie previously worked at Lugar, Poff, McGuire Inc. in sales and property management. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia's Realtors Institute of Virginia. \
ORGANIZATIONS
RON MILLER, building commissioner for Roanoke, was named the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association's 1993 Public Employee of the Year. Miller was instrumental in establishing quarterly meetings between Roanoke and the association in which issues affecting the city and the home-building industry could be discussed.

C. TIMOTHY GARRISON, senior vice president and general manager for Boone & Co., has been elected president of the Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors. DONALD CONSTABLE of Century 21-Lake Country in Wirtz was elected president- elect, and WALTER WHITE of Owens & Co. was elected vice president.
R. BENNETT FIRESTONE, broker and partner of MKB Realtors, has been named the 1993 Realtor of the Year by the Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors. Firestone also is a land commissioner for the U.S. Department of the Interior.
