INMAN PAYS BACK TAXES ON WORKER

Defense Secretary nominee Bobby Inman failed to pay a part-time housekeeper's Social Security taxes until filing a back payment of about $6,000 on Monday, the White House said.

Seeking to avoid a revival of the housekeeper-tax issue, which derailed two women's nominations to be attorney general early in the administration, the White House said Inman had revealed the matter when his name first came up for the Pentagon's top job.

"Admiral Inman fully disclosed this situation and made clear his intent to come into compliance with administration policy on this issue," White House press secretary Dee Dee Myers said.

Inman filed appropriate forms with the Internal Revenue Service on Monday and made the payment, Myers said.
