Edward M. Patterson was still in the neuro-intensive care unit, a hospital nursing supervisor said. Police said the bullet, which struck the left rear part of his head, did not peneatrate the skull. However, the nursing supervisor said, bone fragments did penetrate the brain and are causing complications.
Daryl L. Jones, of 903 Kellogg Ave. N.W. in Roanoke, was charged with malicious wounding shortly after the shooting, Sgt. Stan Smith said.
The shooting occurred at 921 Kellogg Ave. N.W. during an argument among a group of people. Smith said Patterson arrived in a car, got out, and began to argue with Jones.
Police said Jones told them he thought Patterson was reaching into his coat for a gun.
Police said there were several witnesses to the shooting.
