HE'S BACK: EWERT NAMED TO BOARD

Eight years after resigning as Roanoke city manager, Bern Ewert is returning to city government. Sort of.

This time, he's a volunteer.

Monday, City Council appointed Ewert to the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority's board of commissioners.

He is one of seven commissioners for the agency that oversees public and subsidized housing programs and redevelopment projects.

Ewert was appointed partly because of his experience and familiarity with the city's housing problems.

As city manager from 1978 to 1985, Ewert helped shift the focus of Roanoke's housing programs to the rehabilitation of existing housing instead of clearance and new construction.

"Bern knows a lot about housing and we think he can help us," Councilman James Harvey said.

Council also appointed former state Sen. Granger Macfarlane to the city's Economic Development Commission.
