Stephanie Waller, a student at G.W. Carver Elementary School, is the grand prize winner in Salem's Department of Parks and Recreation's 1993 Children's Christmas Card contest.
Winners in the Christmas category are: Brandon Davis, South Salem Elementary, 7 and under age division; and Emily Nichols, Carver, 8 to 11-year-old division.
Winners in the winter category are: Jessica Pettry, South Salem Elementary, 7 and under age division; and Sue Ella Wampler, East Salem Elementary, 8 to 11-year-old division.
Winners in the religious category are: Austin Bond, West Salem Elementary, 7 and under age division; and Jordan Manning, Andrew Lewis Middle School, 8 to 11-year-old division.
\ Bicycle club teaches skills, adjusts bikes
On Dec. 26, members of the Blue Ridge Bicycle Club invites adults and children to bring their new bicycles to Wasena Park from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Club members will be on hand to teach safe biking skills and riding techniques, and to help people adjust their bikes.
Bike helmets are required. The Roanoke Regional Safe Kids Coalition who will loan children helmets for the day. A few adult helmets will be available to borrow, too. For more information, call Barbara Duerk at 343-1616. \
Regional Safety Council elects slate of officers
Fred Weaver, director of risk management at Virginia Tech, has been elected chairman of the Safety Council of Southwest Virginia.
Other officers are:
Glenn Laprade, vice chairman for occupational safety; Kenneth Klinger, vice chairman for individual/community safety; Teresa Schoonover, secretary; Bob Jernigan, treasurer.
Elected to the board of directors were:
Neal Turner, Glenn Asher, Jane O'Keefe, Teresa Schoonover, Ronald James, Rowena Slusher, Sam Reid, Bob Jernigan, George Rakes, and Frank Duffy.
\ `Open gym' program planned for holidays
Roanoke Parks and Recreation will host an "open gym" program during the winter holidays for children who are out of school.
The free program will take place Dec. 28 and 29 at the Parks and Recreation main office gymnasium at 210 Reserve Ave., next to Victory Stadium.
The program is offered for two age groups. Those ages 5 to 10 will participate in activities in the morning and students in grades six through eight will participate in the afternoon.
Parents must fill out a registration form, available at the Parks and Recreation center. For more information, call 981-1253.
\ CB-radio group to disband at year's end
Roanoke Valley REACT Inc. Team 2166 is disbanding as of Dec. 31.
The group was chartered in May 1971 to monitor Emergency Channel 9 as a public service to valley residents and people needing directions. Members said declining membership and a lack of interest in CB Radio were the reasons for breaking up the team.
All remaining team funds will be donated to local charities and the REACT International Legal Fund.
\ Salem Community Food Pantry seeks donations
The Salem Community Food Pantry on Market Street behind St. Paul's Episcopal Church always accepts nonperishable goods and donations; however, they especially need the following items to fill its orders:
Canned juices, dry cereals, canned beans, soups, fruits and meats, spaghetti noodles and canned sauces, mayonnaise, jelly or apple butter and peanut butter, boxed macaroni and cheese, dry milk, six-pack raisins, bar soap, toilet paper, cooked cereal, and coco.
Home-canned foods, outdated foods and baby foods are not accepted.
Pantry hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Friday, except legal holidays.
