She has been part of the center since its organizational stage, when area volunteers took an unused school building and renovated it over a period of years into a center for exhibits, art studios, classes and other activities.
"It has long been my intention to step aside and return to my former, slightly more `balanced' life when the time seemed right," White said. She will still be involved as coordinator of the center's Cultural Heritage Project, to interpret the history of Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee through culture and folk traditions.
The center has been notified of a $75,000 grant from a private Richmond foundation for capital expenses associated with the long-term project.
