Ranking right behind Stanford among Division I schools in recruiting SAT achievers were Northwestern, Duke, Virginia and Vanderbilt.
Stanford football players had an average SAT score of 1069 out of a possible 1600, according to the survey done by USA Today, using NCAA data for freshmen entering from 1990-92.
Northwestern's football players recruited during that period had an average SAT score of 1034. Then came Duke at 1003, Virginia at 955 and Vanderbilt at 952.
Also in the top 10 were Rice, Southern Methodist, California, Notre Dame and Colorado State.
Oklahoma headed up the bottom 10 with an SAT score of 759, followed by Mississippi at 768, Kansas State 769, Cincinnati 771 and Texas-El Paso at 772. Then came Akron (774), Washington State (779), Clemson and Auburn (tied at 781) and Kent (783).
