Grinches stole Christmas, but Leona Helmsley, Willie Randolph and dozens of other New Yorkers brought it back.

After nearly 3,000 gifts were stolen last weekend from a city homeless shelter, the famous and the anonymous alike showed up Wednesday bearing gifts to replace what the thieves had taken.

Randolph, a New York Yankees coach, came with presents and Yankees hats and high-fived children.

Helmsley, serving the last weeks of a 2 1/2-year sentence for tax evasion in home confinement, and her husband, Harry Helmsley, gave $25,000.

"The Helmsleys said that it's really revolting to think that such an inhumane act could take place before Christmas, or any time," said a spokesman. The donation was enough to buy toys for all New York's estimated 4,000 children in homeless shelters, he said.
