MOWER ACCIDENT VICTIM WINS LAWSUIT

A federal jury has awarded $2 million to a woman who lost two fingers in a riding lawn mower accident.

Nancy Keene, a 35-year-old nurse from Tazewell County, was injured in the 1990 accident, according to Jane Glenn, a Roanoke attorney who represented her.

The verdict against the mower's manufacturer, Aircap Industries Inc., is believed to be the largest product-liability award in the Abingdon area.

While operating the mower, Keene leaned down to brush grass from her shoe when her right fingers became entangled in an exposed rotating belt, according to testimony. Glenn argued that the belt should have been covered by a safety guard.
