1ST-CLASS STAMP TO COST 32-35 CENTS

Early in the new year, the Postal Service will begin the process of raising its mail rates, amid speculation that the price of a first-class stamp will jump 3 to 6 cents from the current 29 cents.

Postmaster General Marvin Runyon served notice earlier this year that rates would rise in 1995, meaning that the lengthy rate-making process needs to get under way early in 1994.

The 29-cent rate took effect Feb. 3, 1991, and speculation about the new price of a first-class stamp has ranged from 32 to 35 cents. - Associated Press
