OBIT-SUTPHIN, R. DAVID
SUTPHIN, R. David, Personnel Man, First Class, U.S. Navy, 40, of Norfolk,
formerly of Snowville, died Wednesday, December 22, 1993, in Norfolk, Va. He
was a graduate of Radford University and obtained his M.B.A. degree from
Golden Gate University in California. He entered the service in September 1982
and served in the following commands: The Naval Training Center, Great Lakes,
Ill.; The Naval Technical Training Center, Meridian, Miss.; The U.S.S. Mt.
Whitney; L.C.C. 20; The Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center
(A.U.T.E.C.) of Andros Island, Bahamas; The Personnel Support Detachment;
Oceana Naval Air Station, Virginia Beach and the U.S.S. LaSalle A.G.F. 3,
Norfolk. He was awarded the Naval Battle E Navy Achievement Medal, the
National Defense Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal
and the Enlisted Warfare Service Specialist. In 1992, he was the Sailor of the
Year for the Norfolk Area Personnel Support Detachments. Surviving are his
wife, Mary Jo Lancaster Sutphin, Snowville; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bobby
Sutphin, Radford; two brothers, Steven Sutphin, Kenbridge and Benjamin
Sutphin, Richmond; one sister, Crystal Johnston, Christiansburg. Funeral
services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the Gethsemane Baptist Church, with Pastor
Jerry Gibson and the Rev. Jim Bain officiating. Interment with full military
rites will follow in the Belmont Cemetery. The family will receive friends
from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home.
