RADFORD SCHOOLS GET MORE MONEY

City schools apparently will receive an unexpected holiday present in the form of additional state revenue.

Chairman Guy Gentry said Monday the money may allow the School Board to restore programs eliminated from the schools' 1994-95 $7.6 million budget.

The board will hold a special meeting today at 5:30 p.m. at the school administration building to discuss adjusting the proposed budget.

"We're going to take a look at the cuts, and see if there's anything we can put back in," Gentry said.

Not until the meeting will a monetary estimate of how much additional money the city stands to receive be available, he said.

The School Board was counting on unexpected sources of revenue to materialize during the school year so that some programs eliminated - such as supplemental funding for athletic programs, school nurses, textbooks and reading programs - could be restored.

In all, the board slashed more than $2 million from its original budget, but still approved about $350,000 in increases over the current year.

The proposed 1994-95 budget is substantially higher than the 1 percent funding increase City Council told all governmental departments to observe.
