Collins had bought four shirts, a blazer, a skirt, jeans and a vest with gift certificates from her husband, and at 9 p.m. headed out to King Video on North Main Street in Blacksburg.
While she was inside, someone opened her unlocked silver Grand Am and took all her gifts.
She said she usually locks her car, but downtown had seemed deserted. "We weren't even sure the store was open," she said.
Collins was inside less than 10 minutes. "We're just kicking ourselves," she said. "There are lots of people that leave their [house] doors open."
