TEACHERS OFFER CLASS ON EFFECTIVE PARENTING

Christiansburg Middle School teachers, in conjunction with other county schools, are offering a free course for parents on STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE PARENTING of kids ages 8 through 15. The course runs one day a week for six weeks at Christiansburg High School, and begins in January.

The Christiansburg High School AFTER-PROM PARTY committee will meet Monday in the boys' health room at 7 p.m.

Blacksburg High School is sponsoring a FINANCIAL AID workshop Monday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the school auditorium. Donna Taylor from the Financial Aid office at Virginia Tech will be the guest speaker. The workshop is open to any interested parents or students. In case of snow, it will be postponed until Jan. 5 at the same time.

A reception for participants in the Margaret Beeks Elementary School COMMUNITY READER PROGRAM was held at the school earlier in the year. Members of the community will visit the classrooms and read to the pupils throughout the 1993-94 school year.

They are: Beth Obenshain, Jim Sellers, Sandy Tester, Mayor Roger Hedgepeth, Gary McCoy, Danny Hulshizer, Brad Denardo, Phyllis Albritton-Webb, Herman Bartlett, Ron Secrist, Betty Jahn, Clinton LeGette, Ron Rordam, Suzanne Huff, Maxine Hughes, Donna Ludwig, Ann Yousten, John Muffo, Al Payne and the Honorable Joan Munford.

Shawsville Elementary pupils recently competed in the National Geographic Society's NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY BEE for students from more than 45,000 schools across the nation. Fourth-grade winner were: Chrissy Creva, first place; Roy Nester, second place; Elizabeth Hagood, third place. Fifth-graders placing in the competition were: Matthew Wilcher, first place; Elaine Smith, second place; Jimmy Mundy, third place.

The overall school winner, Elizabeth Hagood, will advance to the next level of competition, a written examination. The winner of the national championship receives a $25,000 college scholarship.

RYAN THOMAS OLSON of Macy McClaugherty School in Pearisburg recently won the First Virginia Banks Inc. 1994 Student Art Calendar Contest. He is one of 13 students whose art will be included in the bank's calendar. Ryan's drawing will be the featured artwork for December.

Ryan won a $150 savings account at the bank, and a $250 contribution to his school.

The fifth-graders at BETHEL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL were recently entertained by Boston Red Sox baseball player Randy Lawrence. He talked about his career as a baseball player and about the importance of a good education to succeed in life.

Lawrence's visit to the school was a surprise to Mrs. Frye, one of the fifth-grade teachers. He was once a pupil at Belview Elementary School where Frye taught kindergarten.

This week CHRISTIANSBURG HIGH SCHOOL AND CHRISTIANSBURG MIDDLE SCHOOL will be featured. Here is what's happening at these schools:

The following students placed in the Reflections Art Contest. This year's theme is ``If I Could Give the World a Gift.''

Christiansburg Middle School winners are: Visual Arts category, Megan Roschelli, first place intermediate, Amber Walson, first place junior division; literature category, Kelli Edmonds, first place and Amber Walson, second place; music category, Timothy Nelson, first place.

Christiansburg High School winners include: Visual Arts Junior Division category, Kevin Altizer, first place; Chandra Overstreet, second place; Carrie Gwinn, third place; and Eric Lucas, honorable mention.

Visual Arts Senior Division winners are: Crystal Clay, first place; Brady Stevens, second place; Jon Hilton, third place; Aaron Hudson and Jason Bauer, honorable mention.

Literature category, Junior Division winners are: David Sowers, first place; Christie Brown, second place; Amanda Taylor, third place; Caleb Kroll, Eric Thurlow and Don Haga, honorable mention.

The high school variety show was held last month. Mandee Calloway was a winner with her medley ``Bodyguard Megamix.'' Eric Davis, Angela Myers and Jessica Memitt took second place as the clogging trio, ``Southern Gold;'' third place winners were Tate Nunley, Dan Gardner, Matt Lucas, Matthew Gardner and Jared Espley with their performance as a band called ``Ain't No Lie.''

Jeremy Cosgriff and Deanna duPlessis were announced as the winners of the Mr. and Miss CHS competition.

Jeremy Cosgriff was chosen as student of the month and senior of the month for November. He is president of the Student Council Association and the Beta Club. He is a member of the National Honor Society, and the Mountain Academic Competition Conference Science team. He runs cross country, indoor and outdoor track, and has been district, all-district and all-regional runner.

The Future Business Leaders of America sponsored a food drive for the Montgomery County Christmas Store and had an overwhelming success. They stood in front of the Kroger Store on Main Street and collected canned food, then canvassed the streets to collect clothing, food and games.
