WILDCATS CRUSH INDIANS 102-84

Marty Early scored a tournament-record 37 points Monday night to lead Rockbridge County to a 102-84 victory over Covington Boys' Home in the first round of the Staunton News-Leader Holiday Tournament.

The Wildcats (4-1) are scheduled to play Tuesday night's Turner Ashby-Buffalo Gap winner today at 8:30 p.m. The Indians are scheduled to play the Turner Ashby-Buffalo Gap loser today at 5 p.m.

Rockbridge County led 55-41 early in the third quarter, but a 20-4 run gave Covington Boys' Home a 61-59 lead with 1 minute, 55 seconds remaining in the period.

The Wildcats responded with an 11-3 spurt to grab a 70-64 lead. Early scored nine of the points in the run.

Donnie Costigan led Covington Boys' Home with 27 points, including six 3-pointers.

Kenny Lewis had 20 for Rockbridge County, and Micheal Chambers added 17 points. Greg Kier scored 18 for the Indians, and Scottie Forbes tossed in 15.

STUARTS DRAFT - Billy Thomas scored 11 of his career-high 18 points in the third quarter to lead the Chargers to victory in the first round of the Staunton News-Leader Holiday Tournament.

Bath County broke open the game by outscoring the host school 21-11 in the third period. Lee Phillips finished with 13 points and Jimmy Woods added a career-high 13 for Bath County (4-2).

Bath County will meet the winner of tonight's Fort Defiance-Wilson Memorial game in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

MARION - The Bobcats lost to the Panthers in the first round of the Marion WOLD Invitational tournament despite a game-high 16 points from Casey Underwood.

Radford (2-5) also held high-scoring Jon Griffin of Northwood (4-1) to 10 points. Daniel Kestner led the Panthers with 14. \

MARION - The Scarlet Hurricane (5-0) staged a fourth-quarter rally to down the Blue Devils (4-1) in the first round of the Marion WOLD Invitational.

Marion was led by Josh Hayes with a career-high 21 points. Grayson County (4-1) was paced by Brian Boyer with a game-high 26. \
