Larry Edward Donahue, 30, of 19th Street, told police his girlfriend answered a knock at the door of her Templeton Avenue Northeast home about 1:45 a.m. Monday.
She was pushed aside as three men entered the home and began to beat Donahue with bats and sticks, police said.
The assailants were gone by the time police arrived, but a bat and a walking stick were found at the scene.
Donahue was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for a broken arm, a possible broken nose and rib injuries.
A short time later, police filed burglary and malicious wounding charges against Anthony Scott Ferguson, 24; Jerry Lee King, 34; and David Bryan Stiff, 22; all of Purcell Avenue Northeast.

Police began an investigation after a woman reported Monday that she was taken out of a Plantation Road restaurant last week by three patrons and beaten in the parking lot. The woman told police three strangers attacked her after she argued in the restaurant with her boyfriend.
After being struck in the head with a bottle, a woman was chased by a man through a motel parking lot and into traffic on Orange Avenue Northeast. A motorist stopped and took her to the hospital. The woman's boyfriend, Jeffrey Owen Cobbs, 30, of Moorman Road Northwest, was charged with malicious wounding. The attack happened about 3 a.m. Tuesday.
