ROBBERS FLASH FAKE BADGES IN 2 THEFTS

Roanoke police are investigating two robberies in which a suspect flashed a badge and said he was a police officer as he approached his victims.

Authorities are not certain if the two robberies are related, but said the victims gve the same basic description of the suspect.

Both robberies happened after the victims were approached in restaurants, one Christmas morning and the other Tuesday night.

In Tuesday's incident, Joseph Ray Bombicka, 74, told police he accompanied four people to a restaurant on Shenandoah Avenue and later was driven home.

A woman who had been with the group came to Bombicka's Williamson Road apartment a short time later and offered sex for money, he told police.

Minutes later, a man - who had also been with Bombicka at the restaurant - burst into the apartment, yelling that he was a police officer and displaying "some type of badge," police said.

The robber took Bombicka's wallet, which contained more than $100, and fled with the woman in a gray, four-door car.

Police are investigating the incident along with the robbery of a 18-year-old patron of a Franklin Road nightspot about 2:30 a.m. Christmas. The 18-year-old told police two men approached him in the bar and indicated they were police officers. After one of the men showed him a badge, they pushed him into a wall and took $41 from his wallet, the victim told police.

None of the robbers was wearing a police uniform.

In other police reports Wednesday:

Robert Allen Jewell, 25, told police he was beaten with a stick in the 700 block of Fifth Street Southwest early Tuesday after he refused to give money to two men. He was treated at Community Hospital.

Robert A. Fleming, 27, told police he was beaten and robbed by two men in the 2000 block of Franklin Road on Tuesday night. He said the men took $150 from his wallet, cursed at him and then threw the empty wallet in his face. - LAURENCE HAMMACK
