TRUCKER CITED AFTER TRAIN HITS HIS RIG

A Kentucky truck driver was charged Thursday with disregarding a railroad crossing signal after his tractor-trailer was hit by a train in Roanoke.

The accident happened about 6:15 a.m. at the Albemarle Avenue crossing, just off Williamson Road.

Roanoke police said James Bell had just turned the tractor-trailer off Williamson and apparently was trying to beat the train to the crossing.

No one was injured. Both the tractor-trailer and the Norfolk Southern freight train were moving slowly.

The train struck the trailer portion of the rig, tearing it into two pieces, police said.
