Tech discovered it had scheduled games with JMU and Southern Mississippi on the same day (Sept. 10). Dropping JMU and adding Arkansas State gives the Hokies a full schedule of Division I-A opponents.
Tech will play Arkansas State, a member of the Big West Conference, at home Sept. 3.
In March 1993, Tech canceled all but the 1994 game of a series with JMU that was scheduled to run through 1999 because the Big East Football Conference had asked its schools not to play I-AA opponents. To qualify for a bowl game, a school must have at least six victories over Division I-A competition.
JMU filled the spot Tech vacated with a home game against Middle Tennessee State.
