The Conference Board, a New York business research organization, said Wednesday its Help-Wanted Advertising Index registered 106 points in January, down from 110 in December but up from 93 in January 1993.
The index is compiled by measuring the volume of classified jobs advertising in 51 major U.S. newspapers. It is considered a measure sensitive to labor market conditions and, thus, the supply of local, regional and national jobs.
The portion of newspapers with growing volumes of employment ads was 45 percent in January, compared with 65 percent in December and 57 percent a year ago.
"Cold weather had a negative impact on job advertising in January, as it had on most economic indicators," said Conference Board economist Ken Goldstein. "The unusually frigid winter weather pattern hammered . . . many regions" of the country. z - Staff report
