VMI PLAYS MARSHALL IN SOUTHERN TOURNEY

VMI opens play tonight at the Southern Conference Tournament in Asheville, N.C. The Keydets, seeded 10th, take on seventh-seeded Marshall at 9:30.

The winner will play the No. 2 seed, Davidson, at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Thundering Herd (9-17 overall, 7-11 in the conference) was one of two Southern teams VMI beat during the regular season. The Keydets (4-22, 2-16) defeated Marshall at home 82-78 and lost to the Herd on the road 78-64.

Junior Lawrence Gullette is leading VMI with averages of 11.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Senior Jonathan Goodman is averaging 10.2 points and 8.4 rebounds.

The Herd, which lost each of its last two regular-season games by 19 points, is paced by Shawn Moore, who averages 17.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. - Staff report
