Last year, snow delayed the Buffaloes' first-round Group A state tournament game and ruined the momentum Floyd County had built in winning the Region C championship. The Buffaloes, after a long delay, were beaten in the opening round of the state tournament.
Ice and snow caused the postponement of the opening round of this year's Region C tournament, in which Floyd County was to play Lebanon and Glenvar was to take on Northwood. Those games have been pushed back to 7 p.m. today at Emory & Henry College.
Parry McCluer and Grayson County, two more Timesland teams, have first-round byes and will play the winners of tonight's games for a berth in the Group A state tournament.
If the doubleheader is postponed again, Region C officials have said they'll play Friday, Saturday and Monday. That would push the opening round of the Group A state tournament for regions C and D back to Tuesday, when they'll participate in a doubleheader at Radford University's Dedmon Center.
While Floyd County and Glenvar are scheduled for first-round action tonight, six other Timesland teams will be seeking berths in next week's state tournament. Northside plays Martinsville in a Region III semifinal at Bassett, where at least one Timesland team will make the state Group AA tournament.
In the other Region III semifinal, at Magna Vista, Jefferson Forest stands between Salem and its first trip to the state tournament. The Spartans are ranked No. 1 in the state Group AA poll. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m.
Blacksburg, after a bye through the first round of the Region IV tournament, will be home at 7:30 p.m. today against Highlands District champion Gate City. The winner goes to the state tournament.
William Fleming meets Woodbridge on the Colonels' court at 7 p.m. today in a Group AAA Northwestern Region semifinal. Both teams were in the state tournament last year, but one of them won't return. Fleming is the defending regional champion.
In Group AAA girls' action, Cave Spring goes to Albemarle at 7 p.m. for a Northwestern Region semifinal. The Knights are seeking a seventh consecutive trip to the state tournament.
