Daryl Noren scored two goals Wednesday night, leading the Greensboro Monarchs to a 4-2 victory over the Roanoke Express in an East Coast Hockey League game at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Noren, a former Greensboro star who rejoined the Monarchs near mid-season, scored his ninth and 10th goals, including one early in the third period that cemented the victory.
The Monarchs came into Wednesday night's game leading the ECHL's East Division, with the Express in fifth place. Yet Roanoke held a 3-2-1 series lead over Greensboro this season, including Tuesday night's 5-2 victory at the Roanoke Civic Center.
"I'm a . . . lot happier than I was 24 hours ago," said Jeff Brubaker, the Monarchs' coach.
Playing in Roanoke, the Monarchs were 0-3-1 this season. At home, they were 3-0 vs. the Express.
"Greensboro has a great team," said Frank Anzalone, Roanoke's coach. "We're proud to lose to them 4-2."
In the third period, Noren scored at the 2-minute, 6-second mark to give Greensboro a 3-1 lead.
The Express' Tony Szabo scored a power-play goal at 12:08 of the period, cutting the margin to 3-2. The Monarchs' Todd Tretter scored an empty-net goal with 41 seconds to play, providing the final margin.
Noren had given the Monarchs a 2-1 lead with 7:23 gone in the second period, off assists from Sebastien Laplante and John Young.
Greensboro's Dan Gravelle tied the score at 1 with 6:01 gone in the second period, when he took a pass from Noren and beat Roanoke goalie Paul Cohen with a shot from the left point. It was Gravelle's 33rd goal of the season.
The Express scored the only goal of the first period, taking the lead with 5:19 gone when wing Jeff Jestadt engaged Monarchs goalie Patrick Labrecque in a one-on-one battle during the game's first power play. Jestadt fired one shot from Labrecque's left, then got his own rebound and fired again - three more times until he squeezed the puck past Labrecque.
With 46 seconds left in the period, Greensboro lost defenseman Dean Zayonce, who received a game misconduct for using Jestadt as a punching bag, landing a series of punishing uppercuts before the officials pulled him off the Roanoke player.
\ ICE CHIP: The Express brought one familiar face to town - defenseman Trevor Burgess, who started the season with the Monarchs before being traded to the Express 11 games ago. With Roanoke, Burgess scored 11 points in his first seven games, but has only two points in his past eight games.
