MAN PLEADS NO CONTEST TO SEX ABUSE

A 61-year-old man was convicted Friday of sexual abuse charges involving four boys he befriended last summer at two Roanoke parks.

Samuel Wilson Carter of Rocky Mount pleaded no contest to four counts of sodomy and eight counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Wanda DeWease.

He will be sentenced later, and faces up to four life terms plus eight years in prison.

The charges involved consensual oral sex with four boys - ages 12 to 16 - on numerous occasions from May to September.

Testimony showed that Wilson met the boys at Highland and Wasena parks and gave them food, soda and money.

He then would drive them to Sylvan Road on Mill Mountain, where the offenses occured. Wilson usually gave the boys $5 before they rode their bikes back down the mountain.

The offenses came to light after a Roanoke police officer stopped Carter's car and questioned one of the boys.
