TECH LEADS PRESTIGIOUS GOLF EVENT

Virginia Tech took advantage of an early tee time Friday to grab a one-stroke lead over the host school at the Florida Southern/ImperiaLakes Golf Classic in Lakeland, Fla.

Ten of the nation's top 20 teams are among the 21 schools competing on the par-72, 6,728-yard ImperiaLakes Golf and Racquet Club course.

The Hokies shot a 3-under-par total of 285, a round that had coach Jay Hardwick beaming.

"One of the things that made this unusual is that we have been able to practice only five of the past 60 days due to the weather," he said. "All things considered, this might be the best round that I've ever seen our team play. We drew a break because we got the first tee time and got out before the wind kicked up and took advantage of it."

Florida Southern is at 286, and Ohio State and Tennessee share third at 287. Virginia is eighth at 290, a shot ahead of second-ranked Wake Forest, which is tied with North Carolina State. scores in Scoreboard. C6)

Nick Cifelli of Furman shot a 4-under-par 68 to take the individual lead. Four players are at 69, including Virginia's Dan Ladd.

For Virginia Tech, Sean Farrell shot a 70 and is tied for sixth, Curtis Deal shot a 71, and Brian Sharp and Matt Martin each shot a 72.

The second round is today, and the tournament concludes Sunday.
