UVA RUNNERS ON TRACK FOR NCAA BERTHS

Pam Lemons, a senior from Floyd County, and freshman Ronde Barber from Roanoke will represent Virginia in indoor track meets today that will give them an opportunity to qualify for the NCAA championships.

Lemons, who scored points in three events at the ACC indoor meet, will compete in the 55 and 200 meters at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships in New Haven, Conn.

Lemons was second in the 200, third in the 55 and eighth in the long jump at the recent ACC Indoor Championships.

Barber, from Cave Spring High School, will run in the 55-meter hurdles at the IC4A championships in Princeton, N.J. He finished fifth in that event at the ACC meet.

Barber's twin brother, Tiki, tied a school record of 7.48 meters in the long jump but was forced to scratch from the ACC meet after suffering a pulled hamstring in warmups for the 55-meter dash. Tiki Barber's participation in the meet at Princeton will depend on the condition of his hamstring.

Radford gave coach Chris Swanenburg his first victory as the Highlanders' lacrosse coach, edging Holy Cross 6-5 in Radford.

Greg Craven scored two goals to lead the Highlanders (1-1). Mike McCarthy had a goal and an assist, and Repp Lambert, Zach Karantonis and Jason Riso each added a goal.

Rob Callahan scored three goals for Holy Cross.

In Charlottesville, Virginia was fourth after the first day of the ACC wrestling championships. The Cavaliers had 17.5 points to trail North Carolina (79.5 points), North Carolina State (48) and Clemson (39.75).

Seniors Mike Krafchick (134 pounds) and Tim Winterstein (158) qualified for today's finals to lead UVa.

Washington and Lee extended an impressive streak when junior Tony Diederich qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships. When Diederich competes in the 200-yard freestyle March 17 at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., it will mark the 15th consecutive year the Generals have sent at least one swimmer to the championships.

Williams earned a spot with a time of 1:43.58, which ranks 18th. The top 16 finishers at the meet will earn All-America status.

In Madison, Wis., the Virginia women's tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision to Southern Cal in the consolation bracket of the USTA/ITA Women's National Indoor Championships.

In Lexington, the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse game Friday against Hampden-Sydney was postponed because of wet field conditions. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference game will be made up at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Lexington.
