Music videos

United Methodists in the Southeastern United States are launching In Tune Video, considered an alternative to the secular lyrics sung to rock-style music. The videos currently are available to churches for $9.95 for the use of youth groups; later youth will be trained to record live music.

Good Friday fast

The Society of St. Andrew based in Bedford County is expanding its Good Friday fast program begun last year. Now known as Wilderness Journey, the program includes readings for the whole period of Lent and encourages donations of money to help alleviate world hunger.

The Phoebe Needles Retreat Center near Callaway in Franklin County will be open for private meditation during Holy Week. A cost of $28 per day is made for food and lodging at the center. For reservations, call 483-3381. Though Episcopal in ownership, the center is open to those of any faith.

Campaign endorsed

Youth leadership in the Natural Bridge Association of Southern Baptists has endorsed the True Love Can Wait campaign to encourage youth to abstain from sexual relations until marriage. A kick-off rally is scheduled tonight at Covington Baptist Church. On April 9 at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge the campaign will be climaxed at a concert by Mark Cable. At that time participating youth will sign a pledge card of their intention to avoid sex outside marriage.

Lenten speakers

Lenten services are under way each Thursday night at Trinity Episcopal Church, 101 Church Ave. in Rocky Mount. Programs begin with worship at 6:15 followed by potluck supper and these speakers at 7: The Rev. Stanrod Carmichael and Marianne Carmichael next week, the Rev. Christine Payden-Travers on March 17 and the Rev. Baldwin Lloyd on March 24.

Homes to be repaired

In Bedford 10 homes are scheduled to be repaired for elderly and disabled residents at Christmas in April Saturday on April 30. Four homes are in the city and six in the county. The ecumenical program seeks volunteers 14 and over as well as donations of building supplies and paints.

New seminary president

Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky., the alma mater of many Western Virginia clergy, has chosen the Rev. Maxie D. Dunnam as its next president. Dunnam, pastor of Christ United Methodsit Church in Memphis, Tenn., also is an author of advocate of church renewal. About half of the school's 910 students are United Methodist.

Ethics training

Training sessions for Church of the Brethren lay and clergy leaders to help them better apply a statement on Ethics in Ministry adopted by the 1992 national convention of the church are scheduled in May and June at six sites in the Virlina District. The meetings, which are required for certain church paid and volunteer leaders, will cover abuse of power and sexual misconduct.

Foreign aid reform

Representatives of Church World Service and Lutheran World Relief met recently with U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher to discuss foreign aid reform. The two agencies, which supply refugees with food and other necessities, submitted a position statement that asks for a different formula for helping some impoverished countries. Currently more than half the foreign aid budget goes to former Soviet Union countries and to Israel and Egypt. The agaencies called for a greater portion to be allocated to the starving in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Carobbean. They also urged that aid to the Middle East be reconsidered as political changes occur in some countries there.
