TECH GOLFERS FINISH 9TH IN FLORIDA

Virginia Tech freshman Curtis Deal finished seventh overall Sunday and the Hokies finished ninth as a team in the ImperiaLakes/South Florida Classic golf tournament in Lakeland, Fla.

Second-round leader Florida State shot a 7-under-par 281 Sunday for a tournament-record 844 total, 20 under par, to win by eight shots over second-ranked Wake Forest. Augusta College was third at 859, Florida State was fourth at 864 and Virginia was fifth at 866.

The Seminoles had the top two individual finishers. Medalist Bobby Cochran, the defending champion, shot a 66 for a 10-under 206 and a one-shot victory over second-round leader Christian Raynor, who closed with a 71. Cochran is the first two-time winner.

Virginia Tech, the first-round leader, shot a 283 Sunday and finished at 869, five shots over par.

Ten of the nation's top 20 ranked teams competed on the par 72, 6,728-yard course at ImperiaLakes Golf and Racquet Club.

For Tech, Deal shot a 3-under par 69 for a 213 total, Brian Sharp finished with a 72 for a 217 total and 26th place, and Sean Farrell and David Havens each shot a 76 to finish at 221.

Virginia's Simon Cooke and Jimmy Flippen each finished at 215 after rounds of 74 and 72, respectively.

In other area sports:

Salisbury State defeated Roanoke 14-13 in a men's lacrosse game in Baltimore. J.J. Blatt led the Maroons with four goals and one assist. Eric Daly added three goals and Jimmy Kammerman had two goals and two assists. Craig Fleming had 18 saves for Roanoke (1-1).

K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke defeated Kwku Grant-Akqueh of Tampa Bay, Fla., 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in a semifinal match to advance to the boy's 14-and-under final in the NationsBank tournament in Aiken, S.C. On Saturday, Hippensteel, seeded fifth in the tournament, defeated Kevin Gill of Indianapolis 6-1, 6-0 in the first round and John Williams of Atlanta 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. In the quarterfinals on Sunday, he defeated fourth-seeded Chris McRae of Louisville, Ky., 6-1, 6-0. The championship match starts this morning at 9:30; Hippensteel was to play the winner of a match late Sunday.

Flip Groggins of Fincastle drove an Oldsmobile Cutlass to victory in the opening event of the GT-1 Sports Car Club of America season at Road Atlanta. He qualified second at an average speed of 115.65 mph, took the lead after the second lap and won by 27 seconds over Tom Volk of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Pole-sitter Joe Pezza of New York was third. Groggins set a lap record of 1 minute, 21.4 seconds, breaking the record of 1:21.7 held by Jimmy Landrum of Dallas.

Three members of the Virginia men's track team placed in the IC4A championships at Princeton University in Princeton, N.J. Rob Cook finished second in the 3,000-meter run in 8 minutes, 21.35 seconds. Former Cave Spring standout Ronde Barber placed third in the 55-meter hurdles in 7.52 seconds and Gerald Howard was fourth in the 55-meter dash (6.39 seconds). The Cavaliers finished 13th in a field of 45 teams.

In New Haven, Conn., the Virginia women's track team placed fourth overall at the ECAC Championships. Georgetown and Seton Hall tied for first with 74 points, George Mason had 55 and the Cavaliers had 51. UVa won the 4x800 relay in 9:05.13. Individually, Rebecca Grube placed second in the pentathlon (3,789 points), Lara Drauglis was third in the mile (4:52.46) and Sharon Servidio finished second in the 3,000-meter run (17:03.83).
