RECOGNIZING CHILDREN'S UNIQUE TALENTS

No doubt anyone who has anything to do with schools or PTAs knows about the National Reflections Program. All but two of Montgomery County's 18 schools participated in this year's PTA-sponsored event, called "If I Could Give the World a Gift . . . ." Elementary and high schoolers alike are encouraged to express themselves in one of four categories - literature, music, photography and visual arts, for a chance to advance to as high as the national finals.

"This is just a way to praise and recognize children for their unique talents," said Glenda Thomas, vice-president of the Montgomery County Council of PTAs. "This is one program that is solely for the children."

The program starts small, on the school level. Winning students then advance to the county, where they are judged by area PTA members. A few lucky students have made it past the district and regional level to compete in the state finals, but no one has made it to nationals yet.
