ROZIER TOPS ALL-METRO

Louisville center Clifford Rozier was the only unanimous first-team All-Metro Conference selection in balloting announced Tuesday by the league.

Rozier, the returning Metro player of the year, heads the all-conference team that includes Virginia Commonwealth's Kendrick Warren, Southern Mississippi's Bernard Haslett, Louisville's Greg Minor and UNC Charlotte's Jarvis Lang. Warren fell one point short of being a unanimous first-team pick.

Warren and Haslett repeated as first-team selections.

Voting is done by the league's head coaches and the Metro Conference Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association, with players receiving two points for a first-team vote and one point for second-team mention.

Dwayne Morton and freshman DeJuan Wheat of Louisville made the second team and were joined by VCU's Kenny Harris, Southern Mississippi's Glen Whisby and Tulane freshman Jerald Honeycutt.

Virginia Tech senior Jay Purcell received 15 points and was the second-highest vote-getter who was not honored. Tulane's LeVeldro Simmons had 19 points. Tech's Jimmy Carruth and Ace Custis each received three points, and Jim Jackson got one point.

\ SOUTHERN MISS SEEKS STATE AID: The Mississippi House has sent to the governor a bill that would help Southern Mississippi pay expenses incurred as host of this week's Metro Conference tournaments in Biloxi.

The bill, approved Monday by the House, had passed the Senate. It would allow Southern Mississippi to keep the sales taxes it collected on tickets sold for the men's and women's tournaments. The women's event began Tuesday, and the men's tournament gets under way Thursday.
