Ninth-ranked Washington and Lee fell behind early and never recovered, dropping a 12-6 decision to Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday in a men's lacrosse game in Buena Vista.

The Tigers (2-1 overall) built a 5-3 lead through one quarter in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Ed Curry scored three goals in a span of 37 seconds in the period as Hampden-Sydney made it 4-0. Curry finished with five goals.

Adam Butterworth led the Generals (1-1) with two goals, and Ty Tydings added a goal and two assists.

Jim Cardillo had two goals and one assist and Chris DiCicco scored two goals for Hampden-Sydney.

The Tigers' Ben Heinsohn made 11 saves, while W&L's David Jones stopped 15 shots.

In other sports Wednesday in the region:

In Deland, Fla., Bo Durkac hit a three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to give Virginia Tech a 5-4 victory over Evansville in the Stetson Invitational baseball tournament.

The Hokies (2-5) trailed 4-2 entering the eighth inning, but when center fielder Popeye Smith was hit by a pitch to lead off, the rally was on. Freshman shortstop Mike Terhune followed with a single to set up Durkac's second game-winning homer of the tournament. On Monday, Durkac's solo shot in the ninth inning gave the Hokies a 10-9 victory over Purdue.

Tech starter Brian Fitzgerald (1-2) gave up eight hits and four runs in eight innings. The sophomore left-hander struck out five and walked one. Freshman Charlie Gillian pitched the ninth, striking out two of the three batters he faced en route to his first save.

The Hokies play Purdue again at 1 p.m. today.

K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke was beaten in the boys' 14-and-under final of the NationsBank National tennis tournament in Aiken, S.C.

Matthew Behrmann of Indianapolis defeated the North Cross student 6-4, 6-1 in the prestigious tournament, a tuneup for the Easter Bowl championships.

By reaching the final of the tournament, which included players from 35 states, Hippensteel did nothing to damage his No. 1 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic region in his age group.
