"We may as well hand everyone a free Coke," said County Administrator William Rolfe.
The concession stand is one of four county-run operations draining the county, Rolfe said during a budget work session Monday with the Board of Supervisors.
He suggested that the county hand over the unprofitable ventures - the recreation field, the Bedford County Nursing Home, the cannery and the landfill - to private businesses.
But the supervisors will consider Rolfe's recommendation over the next few months, then hold a public hearing.
Supervisor Calvin Updike was skeptical about having a private concern take over the landfill.
"I'm a little afraid of that," he said. "I'll just let that ride for now."
