GIS Users Group meets Wednesday CHRISTIANSBURG - The Western Virginia Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Users Group will hold its quarterly meeting at noon on Wednesday Wednesday in the Davis Room at Sunnybrook Inn, 7342 Plantation Road in Roanoke.

The speaker is Fred Phillips, director of management and planning systems for the regional planning agency serving Charleston, S.C. He will talk about the role of GIS in long-range transportation planning, small area damage assessment and contingency planning in the wake of hurricanes Hugo and Andrew.

The meeting includes lunch, and cost is $6 per person. Reservations must be made by Tuesday March 15 with Charlie Huffine at 981-2731.

Tech engineering gets grant BLACKSBURG - Hewlett Packard has awarded the Virginia Tech electrical engineering department an equipment grant worth more than $300,000. The equipment includes 19 computer work stations and a laser printer. The equipment will be available to faculty and graduate students in the department.
